Puerto Rico withdraw from cup
second round of the Shell/Umbro Cup.
And now Bermuda travel to Kingston today for the first round of the qualifying competition knowing that they have to play their hosts not once, but twice.
That was confirmed to Bermuda Football Association on Monday after it was revealed that a second team from their original group of four -- Puerto Rico -- had withdrawn. The Cayman Islands had pulled out earlier, forcing the group matches to be switched from the Caymans to Jamaica.
As a result of Puerto Rico's withdrawal, the two surviving teams in Group Two will play each other twice, first on Friday night and then again on Sunday.
The winners on aggregate will advance to the second round on March 23 and 30 against the winners of Group Six which contains Haiti, Aruba, Netherlands Antilles and the Dominican Republic.
The final of the Shell/Umbro Cup is scheduled for July 4-13 in Antigua, Barbuda or St. Kitt, involving six teams.
The lights at PHC Stadium still aren't bright enough for soccer.
As a result, last night's scheduled First Division clash between Vasco and Dandy Town was postponed for a second time. The first match, played on Feburary 8, was abandoned after 29 minutes because of poor lighting.
The floodlights were expected to be ready for a doubleheader last night, including a friendly between PHC women and the visiting Oneonta College of New York. But the BFA ruled early in the day that the games could not proceed.
The women's game instead was shifted to Devonshire Rec, but no date was set for the Vasco-Dandy Town match.
Oneonta ire scheduled to play a West Select on Friday (7 p.m.) at PHC.
Wolves Girls are through to the women's FA Cup final after Raneika Bean fired a hat-trick to lead them to a 3-1 win over Rude Girls in the semi-final on Monday night at Devonshire Rec.
Bean scored in the third, 18th and 72nd minutes while Sakena Clarke scored for Rude Girls in the 20th minute.
Wolves Girls will meet the winners of the other semi-final between Dandy Stars and PHC Teasers in the April 6 final at National Stadium.
Monday's other match saw Dandy Stars beat Robin Hood 4-0 in a make-up league match. Meredith Brady scored twice in the 30th and 86th minutes while Shernette Smith (23rd) and Allenette Hayward (67th) were the other scorers.
Michelle Clarke of Robin Hood was sent off in the 87th minute for serious foul play.
The Premier Knockout final, which was scheduled for April 6, ahead of the Friendship and Shield finals, has been moved to April 12 at Bernard Park.
Meanwhile, the starting times for this weekend's Commercial Division B matches at Devonshire Rec. have been switched. Devonshire Lions will now play North Village Rams in the 3.00 match while at 1.00 Wolves play Fire Service.
