Wolves live to fight again
(after extra time) The FA Cup has a way of bringing out the best in the underdog and Wolves certainly responded to the task of upsetting First Division champions Vasco at PHC Stadium yesterday.
Twice Vasco took the lead, and twice Wolves, their teeth sharp and ready for the kill, fought their way back in the second half. Under perfect, then treacherous, conditions this match had all the ingredients of a cup tie and in the end a draw seemed a fitting outcome.
Second Division Wolves were never in awe of their favoured opponents, who won the cup two years ago, and not even after Vasco took the lead on the half hour did this match go according to form.
A long ball into the Wolves half by Timmy Figureido saw Sinclair Gibbons open the Wolves defence with a cross from the left and Alex DaCosta's header was turned around the past by Nigel Burgess in the Wolves goal.
From the corner on the right Frankie Simmons found the net with a header.
Vasco stepped up their game after that but Wolves, even with eight teenagers in their starting 11 -- including 15-year-old Bermuda youth team captain John Barry Nusum -- refused to be pushed around.
Their biggest threats came through long balls behind the Vasco defence but striker Khari Sharrieff failed to beat 'keeper Figureido on three occasions.
Two chances came in the space of a minute late in the half when he first beat Trevor Dickinson to a ball into the box but the ball came off his knee and went to the advancing 'keeper.
Moments later Sharrieff got on the end of another through ball but shot straight at the advancing Figureido. Sharrieff had yet another chance a minute before the break but Figureido again blocked the shot.
The second half started in a heavy downpour and quickly the conditions deteriorated as the pitch became slippery and puddles formed. Wolves boosted their attack with the introduction of the aggressive Nathan Webb.
Five minutes into the half they were back on level terms when Webb helped apply the pressure on the Vasco defence and 17-year-old Clevon Hill drove a low shot into the bottom far corner.
Vasco took just six minutes, in pouring rain, to get back in front. Sinclair Gibbons was fouled near the half-way line and Earl Richardson, mourning the death of his grandmother -- a one minute silence was observed at the start -- flighted the ball into the box for Irving Burgess to steer it past Burgess.
Sharrieff, battling on despite a leg injury, redeemed himself for earlier misses when he equalised in the 79th minute with a glancing header into the far bottom corner following a cross which left the advancing Figureido exposed.
Extra-time failed to break the deadlock but tomorrow night's replay promises to be just as exciting.
There were five bookings, Irving Burgess and Frankie Simmons of Vasco and Jomar Wilkinson, Lanario Simmons and Khari Sharrieff of Wolves.
