A look at the men from Derbyshire
Sunday against the Bermuda national team at Somerset Cricket Club at 10 a.m.
Derbyshire, who finished fifth in the county championship last year, are bringing 13 players, including current Test fast bowler Devon Malcolm.
Malcolm was a member of the team that endured a wretched winter tour of India and Sri Lanka where England's Test losing streak reach five.
Malcolm toured here last February as a member of the England `A' team, who then went on to the Caribbean. Another `A' team member returning is medium-pace bowler Dominic Cork.
Derbyshire's tour continues on Tuesday when they face an Under-25 team captained by Glenn Smith. The match has been scheduled for Devonshire Rec. but may have to be changed to Somerset due to the shortage of time in preparing a wicket.
Somerset Cricket Club take on the visitors on Thursday before a big weekend of activity sees the national squad in action for the second time at Lord's in St. David's on Saturday, April 3 and St. George's Cricket Club the next day.
The final match of the tour will be played on Tuesday, April 6 when 1992 league champions Western Stars face Derbyshire.
The following are thumbnail sketches of the Derbyshire cricketers: Kim Barnett: Age 32. Captain. Is a right-hand batsman and leg-break bowler.
Became the youngest captain of a first-class county team when he took over the Derbyshire captaincy in 1983, which also makes him the longest-serving captain in the club's history. Made his county debut in 1979.
Holds most of Derbyshire batting records and played in four Tests for England, the first in 1988. Has scored 1,000 runs in a season 10 times.
Finished 18th in the national averages last season with 1,270 runs at an average of 52.91, which included four first-class centuries and four half-centuries.
John Morris: Age 28. Vice-captain. Right-hand batsman, right-arm medium-pace bowler. Will celebrate his 29th birthday on the tour. Is one of the club's longest-serving players, having made his debut in 1982. Made his Test debut in 1990 and played in three Tests. Has a high score of 191 against Kent in 1986.
Was one of three Derbyshire batsman to score 1,000 runs last season, finishing with 1,236 runs at an average of 41.20 with three centuries and 11 half-centuries.
Chris Adams: Age 22. Right-hand bat, right-arm medium-pace bowler. One of the most promising youngsters at the club and is a regular in the Derbyshire first team and broke the Sunday League record with the highest score in 1992 of 140 not out. Finished with a 41.07 average last year with four centuries and four half-centuries. Scored 1,109 runs last season. Took two catches while fielding as 12th man for England against India at Old Trafford in 1990. Was Derbyshire's top fielder last season with 20 catches.
Peter Bowler: Age 29. Is a right-hand opening batsman. One of Derbyshire's most exciting batsmen. Was English cricket's joint first-class run scorer in 1992 with 2,044 runs but was surprisingly overlooked for the England `A' team, which toured Australia recently. Finished sixth in the national averages last season with an average of 65.93 and a high score of 241 not out. Scored six centuries and 11 half-centuries. Has worked for BBC as a sports journalist on occasions.
Dominic Cork: Age 21. Right-arm medium-fast bowler, right-hand batsman. Was a visitor to Bermuda last year with the England `A' team on their tour of Bermuda and the Caribbean and went on to make his full England debut against Pakistan last summer at Old Trafford. Comes to Bermuda fresh from the England `A' tour of Australia. Once scored a century as a nightwatchman for England Under-19s against Pakistan. Was the Cricket Association's Young Player of the Year in 1991. Took 44 wickets last season at 28.11 each to finish sixth amongst the Derbyshire bowlers. Had a high score of 72 not out in his 504 runs last season.
Frank Griffith: Age 24. Right-hand batsman, right-arm medium-pace bowler. Made his county debut in 1988 and last season scored 242 runs from eight innings at an average of 34.57 and claimed 14 wickets at 25.00 each.
Karl Krikken: Age 23. Right-hand batsman, wicket-keeper. Another one of the youngsters Derbyshire are bring along for the exposure. Scored 323 runs last season with a high score of 57 not out. Made his county debut in 1987. Has a high score of 77 not out against Somerset in 1990.
Devon Malcolm: Age 30. Right-arm fast bowler, right-hand batsman. Was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and is one of the fastest bowlers in world cricket. Like Cork, was in Bermuda a year ago with the England `A' team. Has returned to the England Test team since then and was a member of the team that had a disappointing tour of India and Sri Lanka recently.
Malcolm made his county debut in 1984 and his Test debut in 1989, having become eligible for England in 1987. With West Indian Ian Bishop, forms one of the most feared pace attacks on the county circuit. Finished well down the first-class averages last season with 45 wickets at an average of 36.62 each.
Took 10 wickets for 137 runs against West Indies in the 1990 Test in Trinidad.
Ole Mortensen: Age 35. Right-hand batsman, right-arm fast-medium bowler. Born in Vejle, Denmark and has represented them in ICC Trophy. Made his debut for Derbyshire in 1983. Has had tours to East Africa, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Holland with Denmark. Has played during the off-season in Auckland and Melbourne. Plays for Derbyshire as an honorary Englishman under EEC regulations, so is not classified as an overseas player. Had best bowling figures of six for 27 against Yorkshire in 1983.
Timothy O'Gorman: Age 25. Right-hand batsman, off-break bowler. Scored 880 runs last season from seven half-centuries with a high score of 95. Made his county debut in 1987 and has scored 16 first-class half-centuries and five centuries. Is a solicitor by profession. Was the Surrey Young Cricketer of the Year in 1984 and captained Surrey Young Cricketers for three years. Also had trials for England schoolboys in hockey. Had a highest score of 148 against Lancashire in 1991.
Alastair Richardson: Age 20. Middle-order batsman, right-arm fast-medium bowler. Richardson was a late inclusion in the Derbyshire tour party after Simon Base failed to recover completely from the back injury, which kept him out of county cricket for most of last season. Richardson signed professional terms in 1991 and in doing so followed his father and grandfather into full-time first-class cricket. Represented England at under-18 and under-19 levels.
Richard Sladdin: Age 24. Right-hand batsman, left-arm bowler. Was one of Derbyshire's top bowlers last season, finishing with 30 wickets at an average of 40.40 each. Made his county debut in 1991.
Allan Warner: Age 33. Right-hand batsman, right-arm fast bowler. Began his career in 1982 with Worcestershire before joining Derbyshire in 1985. His highest score was 91 against Leicestershire in 1986 while his best bowling is five for 27 for Worcestershire against Glamorgan in 1984. Claimed 27 wickets last season at 30.25 each.
