Bail set at $2,000 for man who threatened bouncers
A man was found in possession of a pipe wrench after threatening bouncers at the Swizzle Inn on South Shore.
Magistrates' Court heard Jermaine Willis was discovered with the weapon in a nearby road after behaving "aggressively" at the restaurant. Bouncers had evicted him earlier and he had threatened to "come back with something for them," the court heard.
Willis, 28, of Warwick, admitted possession of an offensive weapon yesterday. Crown counsel Nicole Smith said Willis visited the Swizzle Inn, on South Shore, on December 16 but was asked to leave after the door staff noticed him "acting aggressively".
"He told them he would come back with something for them and left," said Ms Smith. "The security personnel took this as a threat and were fearful of their safety. The Police were called."
Officers left shortly afterwards to attend an emergency but Willis was later questioned by Police after being spotted walking along a nearby road. "While talking to Police he was seen fidgeting and acting suspiciously," said Ms Smith. "Officers found a heavy-duty pipe wrench on his person."
Willis told Police: "I carry this for my defence. I'm Jamaican."
But following his arrest, he told them: "I'm guilty, but I didn't know it was an offence."
The court heard Willis, a tradesman, had no previous convictions in Bermuda. Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo adjourned sentencing until March 24 to consider a Social Inquiry Report. Bail was set at $2,000.
