'Skinny' tribute to start season
Bermuda Motorcycling Racing Club (BMRC) will kick-start their new season by remembering Marvin "Skinny" Robinson who died while practicing at Southside speedway 12 months ago.
The first annual Marvin "Skinny" Robinson memorial race day will feature two guest Canadian Superbike riders who will showcase their skills at Southside, in St.David's, from –2 p.m. on Sunday.
Champion rider Robinson, 34, died after his 600cc motorbike collided with a fence.
President of the BMRC, David Jones, became a close of friend of Robinson and described him as a "very popular guy" who had been deeply missed by everyone associated with the club.
"I knew "Skinny" for around two seasons but it felt like I knew him for a lot longer," he said.
"He was one of those guys who you just clicked immediately with.
"I taught him when he first arrived and I probably taught him too well because he started beating me!"
Jones said the club also intended to remember another one of their sons Kyle Pimental who lost his battle with cancer last August.
The well-known 125cc racer was just 22 years old.
With a raft of young racers set to compete for the first time, Jones said the new season promised plenty of thrills and spills.
"A lot of our young riders have stepped from GP70 Class to GP175 Class and they're looking very well suited," he said.
"We've also got around five new guys who will be racing competitively for the first time.
"One youngster to look out for this year will be Bruce Degrilla jr - he's definitely the guy to beat this season."
Rising race stars Toriano Wilson, Jevaughn Simons and Antoine Richards are all products of the Southside stable and Jones believes their overseas successes are a reflection of the club's strength in nurturing talent.
"Guys like Toriano, Jevaughn and Antoine all started with us and have now gone on to bigger and better things," said Jones. "They are an inspiration to all the other young guys coming through."
Bermuda Motorcycling Racing Club will be holding a meeting tonight at the Bermuda Industrial Union at 7 p.m.
