Tour gives second choice 'keepers chance to shine

Three of the Island's top goalkeepers will miss tomorrow's next round of Coca Cola league matches because of the Bermuda Under-23s' tour of Florida.

The gap leaves second choice 'keepers Paul Hayward, Keenan Tucker and Detroy Smith to fill major gaps brought on by the absence of Dwayne (Streaker) Adams, Timmy Figureido and Troy Hall of BAA, Vasco and St George's respectively.

All will jump right into the thick of the action as teams try to make up for the loss of key players because of the Under-23 tour.

For only the second time in the last two and a half seasons Hall will be out of the St. George's goal -- the last time being earlier this season when Smith filled in for him against Devonshire Cougars -- and a big task awaits his replacement against league champions Dandy Town at Wellington Oval.

Points are at a premium for every club in the First Division and tomorrow should be no exception as leaders Town look to hold onto, if not extend, their slim one point lead. They have got the better of St. George's in recent meetings, including a come-from-behind 2-1 win earlier this season and a 4-1 win at Wellington Oval in their final match last season when they wrapped up the league title.

Town should have the bulk of their squad to choose from for their second straight trip to the East End and should be favoured for at least a point. St.

George's will be full of determination knowing that another loss would sink them even lower in the standings.

Last-placed BAA and revived Vasco meet in another important clash. BAA won their last outings against St. George's to keep within reach of the teams immediately above them while Vasco have risen to a mid-table position after taking eight of a possible 10 points in their last five matches, during which time they have been unbeaten.

North Village against Boulevard, fourth and third in the standings, and Somerset against Devonshire Cougars are the top matches this weekend.

Village's dismal home record is getting much attention and Boulevard are hoping the bad run will continue for their visit as they seek to remain in contention for the top spot.

There is just a one point gap between Boulevard and fifth and sixth-placed teams PHC and Vasco, so Boulevard -- and Village too -- know the consequences if they lose.

The Trojans have not enjoyed a good start to the new year, having draw and lost their two matches in the league in the second half while also going down to Vasco in the FA Cup. That should give Cougars confidence of springing a surprise at the west end, having just come off a good win over Town in the FA Cup.

Devonshire Colts and PHC meet for the second straight week, this time at Frog Lane, as the home team looks to improve on their second-from-bottom position.

An outcome on their recent abandoned match against Devonshire Cougars is still eagerly awaited but in the meantime Colts recognise that they will need to embark on a good run if they are to steer clear of the relegation zone.

A victory for Colts could lift them three or four places up the standings, with just two points separating them from Village in fourth.

Social Club, once a First Division power, are in a good position to challenge for the second promotion spot behind leaders Southampton Rangers who they meet in Sunday's top match in that division.

Social Club, presently third, need at least a point against unbeaten Rangers to stay in contention as they have a game in hand over other challengers Somerset Eagles, St. David's and Port Royal.

Just one one point separates second from fourth in the standings.

Port Royal take on Wolves, who would benefit greatly from a Social Club loss, while the other matches see St. David's at home to Prospect and Somerset Eagles entertaining Hamilton Parish at White Hill.

George's will both miss First Division matches this weekend as they fly to Florida today with the Under-23 squad.
