Premier: Sonesta site purchase shows investors want to come in
The purchase of the former Sonesta property is “exciting” and shows that investors want to work with Bermuda, Premier Craig Cannonier told a press conference yesterday.Mr Cannonier, commenting on the news that the Green family has bought the land in Southampton from a US-based financial firm, said it showed there was level of “comfort” felt by investors about the future of the Island. The Premier said of the Greens: “We know that they are looking to build another hotel property there. Right now, it’s in its infancy stage as it is just being purchased.“It’s exciting news to know that that property will now be developed.”He said Government was keen to get a timeline from the new owners for the hotel development. “We will letting you know about this,” he added.Mr Cannonier said the fact the new owners were Bermudian “means so much to the Country that we have our own being able to invest in the future of this Country”.He added: “It represents a bit of change in direction that we are going in.”The Premier cited Sonesta as evidence that more jobs were on the way for Bermudians, along with interest from potential purchasers in hotel land in St George’s and renovations due to start at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, which is also owned by the Green family. The One Bermuda Alliance leader said his party had inherited an unemployment situation far worse than previously thought.“The rates that we thought we were at is not the rates we are finding out. We don’t have 3,000 unemployed; there is far more numbers,” Mr Cannonier said.“Acquiring some of the challenges that we have, overnight, is not going to be easy dealing with overnight. It’s not going to happen overnight. But we are confident in the plans that we have put together.”He told the media that the Budget debates had meant a “gruelling” couple of weeks but had reinforced the need for the Government to now focus on job stimulation.“There is a lot of work that needs to be done,” he said. “We need to be about the business of the community and that means social and economic equity for everyone.”Meanwhile, Shadow Minister of Tourism Wayne Furbert was deighted to hear the Green family had purchased the South Shore property.“They are great corporate citizens and this is great for Bermuda. They have already showed their support by purchasing Fairmont Hamilton Princess and I believe this good purchase will enhance the tourism product going forward,” he said.
