Bonfire night is still on
Bonfire Night 2010 will be going ahead despite the possibility of bad weather.
The third annual Bonfire Night 2010 organised by the Oxford and Cambridge Society, and supported by the Corporation of St. George and the St. George's Foundation, is planned for today at 6 p.m. at Gates Bay Beach in St. George's (commonly known as Fort St. Catherine's Beach).
Organiser Becky Ausenda said there was a possibility that they would not have the planned fireworks if there was highwinds, but they were going ahead with Bonfire Night.
After the start, at 7 p.m. a special Guy Fawkes effigy made by students at St. George's Preparatory School will be thrown on the bonfire and at 8 p.m. fireworks will begin.
There will be refreshments on sale that will include a bar, and hot chocolate.
"We will be selling sparklers and glow sticks," said Mrs. Ausenda. "Selenas, the fast-food restaurant in St. George's will be our food vendor this year. She recently did a massive Selenas Day Party just beyond the Causeway to thank all her customers. She is really well-known in St. George's."
She said the organisers were grateful to The Hyatt for giving them permission to hold the event there, despite the fact that the site will soon be developed into a new hotel.
"We are grateful to the Corporation of St. George's and the St. George's Foundation for their support, as well as all our volunteers and donors," she said.
"Everyone likes having this event on the beach as opposed to the town centre. It is fun to take your beach blankets and hurricane lamps and sit on the beach. You can watch the fire.
"This year we have a lot of tree trunks that fell down during Igor to fuel the fire. We also get some wooden pallets from shipping containers."
