Devonshire Cougars scored four unanswered goals against BAA at Devonshire Recreation Club yesterday.

The win allowed Cougars to leapfrog X-Roads into fourth place while the loss keeps BAA in sixth place. With nothing to play for other than pride, both teams had outfield players in goal as midfielder Troy Tucker gloved up for BAA and burly striker Mark Steede guarded the goal for the Cougars.

Tucker appeared to be enjoying himself as he was able to display his outfield skills on many occasions with flicks and dribbles when he intercepted passes or shots. However, it was Steede, the Cougars goalkeeper and club president, who had the last laugh as he was able to keep a clean sheet.

“We’ve done a good job, worked hard and finished strong,” Vance Brown, the Cougars coach, said. “The guys believed in themselves and had a good season.”

It took 25 minutes to break the deadlock when Cougars captain Zeko White dispossessed BAA striker Keishen Bean deep the Cougars half before going on a dribble and was upended in the penalty area to earn his side a penalty. Allan Douglas planted his spot kick to the left of the outstretched arm of Tucker.

BAA almost scored early in the second half when a goal kick sent Nathan Rego on a run down the left flank where his low cross forced Steede to come off his line and smother the ball.

Calin Maybury scored the goal of the game when he picked up a loose ball midway in the BAA half before unleashing a spectacular shot that beat Tucker for pace. Tucker then pulled off a point-blank save but Allan Douglas was fouled going for the rebound to give up another penalty. This time, Tucker guessed correctly and pushed captain White’s kick around the post for a corner.

Dimitre Daniels collected the resulting corner kick and dribbled across goal before slotting inside Tucker’s near post. Substitute Nyeem Simmons closed out the scoring in the 82nd minute when he picked up a loose ball inside the box before hitting a tame shot under the body of Tucker. Despite the game being played in good spirits, London Roberts was given a red card in the 85th minute for foul and abusive language.
