Boulevard singing in the rain at Somerset

On target: Boulevard Niko Smith, right, found the net

Somerset Trojans 2 Boulevard 0

Boulevard left Somerset Cricket Club with smiling faces after a win over Somerset Trojans yesterday.

First-half goals from Niko Smith and Khiry Easton secured three points for Boulevard in a game that was played in a continuous downpour. Shane Powell, the Boulevard coach, said: “It was a good game considering the weather conditions. We respect Trojans for trying to make a game of it and I respect my team for getting the three points.”

In the fourteenth minute, Boulevard scored against the run of play. A high cross from winger TiaeVince Douglas was neatly controlled by Smith who gave Trojan’s goalkeeper Jade Morrissey no chance with a well-placed shot from six yards.

Boulevard scored a second when midfielder Dunnya Taylor gave a weighted through ball to Easton who beat the onrushing Morrissey with a shot that slid under his body.

Midway through the first half, Somerset had an appeal for a penalty turned down when winger Jeze Butterfield beat an onrushing Shakir to the ball. It appeared that Shakir got more of Butterfield’s foot then the ball but referee Anthony Bailey gave Somerset a throw-in instead.

Somerset had one more attempt before the half when Corday unleashed a powerful strike from 30 yards that brought off a good save from Shakir who dove to his right and held onto the shot.

Somerset made a substitute at the half bringing in captain Trevin Ming at centre half and pushing Jaz Ratteray-Smith into midfield.

In the 75th minute, Ratteray-Smith was in position to receive a deflected pass which he struck on the volley calling upon Shakir to make a point-blank save.

It was not to be Somerset’s day as they had the ball in the back of the net in the 89th minute only to have it disallowed for offside. Somerset’s coach, Danvers Seymour Jr, said: “We missed opportunities and a slow start made us pay.”
