In-form Hogges looking to climb the table
The Bermuda Hogges head to North Carolina today to take on the Wilmington Hammerheads at Legion Sports Complex with the sides seperated by a solitary point in USL Division II.
The Hogges, who have already beaten their hosts this season 2-0 at the National Sports Centre (NSC), are looking to do the double over their opponents and move themselves away from the bottom of the table.
Currently sitting on 10 points and lying seventh in the ten-team division, Bermuda face a Wilmington Hammerheads side who are lying ninth in the standings and come into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw against sixth place Harrisburg City Islanders.
The Hogges' last two outings have produced some welcome results for a side who had been going through a rough patch of form, losing five consecutive games before a 3-1 win over Western Massachusetts at BAA, and an encouraging 1-1 draw against the Charlotte Eagles, a side who thumped the Hogges –6-0 in the season opener.
"Whenever we've played the Eagles they've beaten us comfortably and before the game I said 'guys we've got to have a go at them'," said coach Kyle Lightbourne.
"It was a good point to take of them and we would have taken it before the game – it was a good team effort."
With many key players returning from Bermuda World Cup Qualifying campaign, the side should be at its best as they enter into the month of July that contains four games against sides that are below them in the table.
Trips to Wlimington, last place Pittsburgh Riverhounds, and home and away fixtures against eighth place Real Maryland Monarchs should put the Hogges clear of their closest foes chasing them down if victories are attained.
The other two fixtures are against fourth place Richmond Kickers and second place Cleveland City Stars.
Keishen Bean was also selected to the USL Division II team of the week for his performance against Charlotte, which was capped off by a goal, and will be available for selection tomorrow night along with his national teammates.
With a crucial month ahead of the side, their season and positioning in the table is in their hands and only they can make the Island proud.
