Official opening of Berkeley Institute this evening
An Olympic-style torch relay will kick off the official opening ceremony for the Berkeley Institute's new building today.
Premier and Berkeleyite Alex Scott will lead the relay after lighting the torch outside the original Berkeley building at the old Samaritans' Hall on Court Street, Hamilton, at 5.15 p.m.
Members of the public are invited to attend the event, which is being held on the school's Founders' Day.
The torch relay will travel along Cedar Avenue to St. John's Road where it will pick up Berkeley's old cross-country route at the foot of Langton Hill.
It will continue along North Shore Road and pass through Spanish Point onto St. John's Road and into the second Berkeley Institute building, on Berkeley Road.
The final lap will follow a moment's silence at the old school when the torch will be taken up the hill to the new facility and a virtual eternal flame will be lit.
The rest of the ceremony will take place in front of the Berkeley Institute and will feature speeches by Government Ministers, school governors, principal Michelle Simmons plus guests Lt. Col Edward Lamb and Nikkita Scott.
Entertainment will come from the Berkeley Institute Jazz Ensemble, the Bermuda Regiment Band and the Berkeley Institute Dance Troupe.
Those attending are asked to share cars or take a free shuttle bus from Hamilton Bus Station. Parking will be on the school field.
