Bermuda came to a temporary halt when he was caught drunken driving.

Watson, 55, of Old Rectory Lane, Pembroke will now miss a year on the road after being disqualified and fined $400 in Magistrates' Court.

Prosecuting Sgt. Kenrick James said that in the early hours of April 4, Police spotted Watson driving his white Lancier in such an erratic manner on Front Street that he took a corner so tightly that he almost hit the kerb and failed to stop at a "Stop'' sign.

Sgt. James said that officers approached Watson after he had stopped and climbed out of the car. They said he appeared unsteady on his feet. He was breathalysed and the test proved positive.

Defence counsel Ms Karen Williams said: "He apologises. He has 17 years of impeccable driving in Bermuda. At that time of the morning he was no danger to anyone.'' but Police had to take evasive action when a driver they believed to have been drinking swerved in front of them.

Charles Edward Douglas, 64, admitted driving while over the legal blood alcohol limit.

Police had spotted Douglas, of St. John's Road, Pembroke, driving his car very slowly, in Pembroke.

Prosecuting Sgt. Kenrick James said that Douglas's car crossed the centreline of Middle Road. It had pulled over to the right hand lane to turn into Hermitage Road.

Sgt. James said: "It then swerved back and the officer driving had to take evasive action to avoid a collision. When the defendant got out of the car he appeared unsteady on his feet and his eyes were glazed.'' Douglas told the Police: "Can't you give me a break I was just taking the young lady home.'' He told Magistrates' Court that he had not taken much alcohol but Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis said: "If you do not need that much alcohol to exceed the analyser then the sensible thing to do is not to take any alcohol.'' Douglas was fined $350 and disqualified from driving for a year.

In another case, yesterday, Aleck John Roberts was fined $350 and banned for a year for driving while impaired by alcohol on Pitts Bay road.

Roberts, 32, of Store Hill, Smiths, was seen riding a motorcycle out of the Hamilton Princess Hotel by Police.

Officers watched as his bike stuck the sidewalk and he continued to drive erratically along the road. When stopped he appeared unsteady on his feet and was arrested.
