Ton-up Cann sinks Cleveland
St. David's 216, Cleveland 141
Acting skipper Lionel Cann ruined Cleveland's hopes of a Camel Cup place next season when he blasted 116 to lead St. David's to a 75-run victory in yesterday's only Premier Division game of the day at Lord's.
The points saw the east enders, champions last season, finish third in the table behind champions Western Stars and second placed Southampton Rangers.
Cann helped dig his team out of trouble after they had slipped to 38 for two as he joined O.J. Pitcher (25) in a third wicket stand of 36.
When Cann - captaining the team in place of Clay Smith who was resting his knee for Sunday's Premier Division Knockout final - was eventually out his team had reached a formidable 201.
His dismissal came when he was caught on the boundary by veteran Grant Smith off veteran spinner Johnny Richardson.
Although he struck 11 fours and eight sixes, Cann said he had taken a restrained approach.
"I had added responsibility today. We fielded many of our youngsters and after we lost two early wickets my whole approach was cautious. I hit straight all day, no cross batting. When I did play across I was caught," he said.
Others chief contributors to the score were opener Delyone Borden with 21 and Del Hollis 20. Johnny Richardson took four for 29 off eight overs and Jeff Tyrrell had three for 52 off nine overs.
Cleveland lost their first wicket on one and never recovered, their score only showing respectability when tailenders Grant Smith (24) and Tyrrell (23) added 45 during a last-wicket stand.
Richardson hit 22 and skipper Courtney Smith 21.
Del Hollis was the best of the home side bowlers with four wickets for 34 runs off 10 overs.
Devonshire Rec. 139-8
Police 50
Brothers Lamont and Derek Brangman combined to take six wickets while skipper Winston (Herb) Trott struck 47 not out to spur Devonshire to an 89-run victory over Police in the First Division Knockout final at White Hill Field on Saturday.
Sent in to bat on a pitch which was still damp from overnight rain, which caused a delay and reduction of eight overs, Devonshire had to fight hard for runs on a lively pitch.
But openers Wendell Swan and Omar Amory weathered the storm to put on 39 runs for the first wicket, Swan being the first dismissal for nine. Amory carried on to score 29 and partner Ricardo Brangman 13 in a second-wicket stand of 19.
Except for a sixth-wicket stand worth 23 runs between skipper Trott and Dennis Williams (12) there was little stability among the Devonshire bats.
However, thanks to the late heroics of Trott, they were able to post a modest total on a deteriorating pitch.
Rashan Perera was the top bowler for Police with four for 21 off nine overs while Allan Wilkinson claimed two for 36 off seven overs.
Police were unable to make any batting headway on the poor batting strip and their chances of producing any decent individual scores diminished as Devonshire's seamers bowled a good line and length.
No single Police batsman reached double figures, top scorer being veteran all-rounder Dennis Archer who scored nine.
Police lost their first wicket, that of Andrew Rollins (4) with six runs scored and wickets were to fall at regular intervals afterwards as the medium pacers ripped through the batting. Police eventually succumbed in 20.4 overs.
Lamont Brangman spearheaded the Devonshire attack with four wickets for 11 runs from nine overs while brother Derek claimed two for two in just one over.
Ryan Swan and Dennis Williams also had impressive figures, Swan taking two for 17 off five overs and Williams two for 18 off 5.4 overs.
Jamaican Association sprang a major surprise when they beat West Indian Association by 60 runs in their replayed Commercial Cricket League Knockout semi-final at Shelly Bay yesterday.
The Jamaicans recovered from a precarious 19 for four to reach 190, thanks largely to a Donovan Livingston half century and an aggressive 31 from Clive Barrett, and then dismissed league runners-up WIA for 130, Dave Greenidge top-scoring with 43.
The Jamaicans, twice thrashed by WIA in the league this season, will now meet league champions Leg Trappers in the final at Lord's next Sunday.
Scores: Jamaican Association 190 in 38.1 overs (Donovan Livingston 59, Clive Barrett 31; Stan Francis 3-34, O.Clarke 2-45), West Indian Association 130 in 30.1 overs (Dave Greenidge 43, Jerry Callender 21; Kevin Abrahams 3-24, Junior Lindo 2-29, Donovan Livingston 2-31).
