Man remanded in road crash case

A man accused of causing his friend serious injury in a drink-driving crash was yesterday remanded in custody pending a trial date.

Shawn Gibson had earlier pleaded not guilty to charges that he caused grievous bodily harm to Daniel Wilks while impaired.

The Southampton resident also denied driving while impaired and refusing to give a breath sample to Police on April 13, 2008.

The 35-year-old headed to Supreme Court for trial in October, where he changed his plea to guilty.

In Supreme Court yesterday for sentencing, Gibson continued to plead guilty but told Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves that he wasn't on the bike involved in the accident.

Mr. Justice Greaves told Gibson that any plea needed to be unequivocal.

"You can't plead guilty and at the same time say it wasn't you," he said. "No matter what you say from now on you're going to trial. You're wasting the court's time."

The accident involved a collision between a motorcycle, allegedly ridden by Gibson, and a car driving in the opposite direction.

Mr. Wilks, who was riding pillion, suffered leg injuries, two punctured lungs, broken ribs, a broken back and a broken shoulder blade.

He lay in a coma for three weeks.

Gibson suffered a broken nose and broken pelvis.

Mr. Justice Greaves ordered Gibson to be held in remand until a trial date could be set.
