Public schools to be closed on Friday for traditional holiday

Public schools will be closed on Friday after teachers refused to use the day to make up for lost lessons.

A spokeswoman for the education ministry said classes would restart on a remote basis on Monday after the traditional Friday closure.

The holiday was designed to allow pupils to view the annual Ag Show, which will be held at a later date on a virtual basis.

The spokeswoman added: “While the department is mindful of the disruption that the coronavirus pandemic has had on the school year, and on learning for children, it was hoped that this Friday could be used to make up previously lost days.

“The Bermuda Union of Teachers respectfully declined our request.

“As a result, Friday’s school holiday will go ahead as scheduled.”

The spokeswoman added that the ministry was aware of concerns from parents about the schools being closed on Friday after an already extended Easter break.

She said: “These concerns are not lost on us and the department will continue to work with the BUT to see how any of the lost learning days can be regained before the end of the school term.”
