Few surprises for Cup
for this week's 95th Cup Match were finalised on Saturday with few surprises.
The three colts -- Treadwell Gibbons and Corey Hill of Somerset and Gregg Foggo of St. George's -- were all anticipated while Dean Minors, Clarkie Trott and Janeiro Tucker all returned.
Coming out for Somerset were Rodney Fubler, Richard Basden and Shannon Warner, neither of whom played in the last trial, while Foggo, Minors and Trott were named by the champions for last year's captain, Graham Fox, Dale Fox and Dexter Smith.
Ricky Swan, chairman of the Somerset selectors, is confident with the allround strength of their team, with has quality in both the batting and bowling.
"We reached an agreement on the team fairly quickly, less than an hour and the members were quite pleased with our choices,'' said Swan. "There were no long discussions when we presented the team.
"With just one trial game we had to look at the league performances of the players as well, so everything didn't hinge on Saturday's game.'' Once again Ricky Hill has been overlooked by Somerset, though this time he apparantly came close to a recall. However the second opening spot will be taken by Gibbons, who at 39 makes his debut as Cup Match's oldest colt -- 20 years after first trying out for St. George's.
Gibbons, Albert Steede and Janeiro Tucker all scored 70s as the Vice President's XI smashed 321 on their way to a 91-run win in the trial game.
Corey Hill cemented his spot with five for 96 from 21 overs and then Andre Manders made certain of staying in the team with a top score of 96 for the President's team.
Captain Dexter Basden is also pleased with the team the selectors have chosen this year.
"It's a winning team, a lot of the guys are on form now and our chances look good,'' said Basden.
"We have a lot of options when it comes to opening with Treaddy Gibbons, Albert Steede, Roger Trott and myself all capable of doing the job .. . we then have five top bowlers with Gibbons and then maybe myself.
"But I haven't done a lot of bowling the last two years and will only bowl to change ends or give somebody a short break.'' The St. George's selectors were also quick in their deliberations with the selection apparantly coming down to which two from batsman Dexter Smith and bowlers Clarkie Trott and David Adams would be included. In the end Smith was the odd man out and Glenn Smith, who kept wicket last year in the absence of Minors, now looks the likely choice to open the batting with Wendell Smith.
"I would have been a bit more disappointed if I was 25,'' said Smith who has made three appearances. At 35 he hasn't ruled out a comeback next year.
Smith could only manage seven in the last trial game while Glenn Smith, opening for the President's XI, stroked 46 from five fours and three sixes before his captain Clay Smith called him in.
Foggo, who celebrates his 25th birthday today, is thrilled with his inclusion.
He will be given the job as opening bowler alongside Clarkie Trott. "My main goal is to go up to Somerset and make myself proud and everybody who is rooting for me proud,'' said Foggo.
"I just want to go and bowl well, keep a constant line and length and let the batsmen make the mistakes.''
