Heroin addict admits stealing cheque

A 23-year-old man was in Magistrates' Court yesterday charged with receiving a stolen Butterfield Bank cheque, forgery, handing over a stolen item and obtaining property with it.

Jamel Jaki Nesbitt, from Gate House Park, Southampton, pleaded guilty to the four offences, which occurred between September 8 and 12, 2006.

The court heard that RBK Advertising had produced a cheque payable to Tony Brennon for the sum of $4,125.

When the cheque went missing from their offices, they contacted the bank.

The cheque was located in Nesbitt's account on January 24, 2007 and had been signed by him.

Crown counsel Cindy Clarke told the court Police arrested Nesbitt on the same day and during the interview he admitted to signing the cheque and depositing it in his account.

He also told Police he withdrew the money to purchase heroin to which he has an addiction.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner asked: "Do you have anything to say?"

Nesbitt said: "Yes, I would like to be sent to drug court."

Mr. Warner remanded Nesbitt in custody and ordered a Social Inquiry Report be produced before sentencing.
