Swim team set freestyle relay record

seconds as they narrowly missed claiming the Island's first medal on day four at the Central American and Caribbean Age Group Swimming Championship in Mexico.

The team of Trevor Nelson, Ronald Cowen, Matthew Hammond and Stephen Troake clocked 3:51.82 to finish one and a half seconds behind bronze medallists Puerto Rico. The Mexican team won the gold, three body lengths ahead of Venezuela.

Meanwhile, in individual performances, Nelson and Hammond earned further points for the Bermuda team.

Hammond set a new national age group record in the 13-14 400 freestyle when he dropped 10 seconds off his heat time to finish fifth in the final in 4:25.31 -- a mere two and a half seconds behind the winner and just three seconds shy of Geri Mewett's Bermuda senior record.

Nelson also swam a PB in the 13-14 200 metres breastroke (2:38.71) to place seventh in the final and Trevor Ferguson swam 1:06.37 in the 18-21 100m backstroke for sixth in the final and a PB.

Hammond enjoyed another fine performance in the 13-14 200 metres freestyle when he placed fifth in a time of 2:05.84, shaving two and a half seconds off his heat time.

Stephen Fahy improved his time in the 15-17 100m butterfly, earning a sixth place finish in the final. Fahy swam a 59.09, taking two and half seconds off his heat time. Craig Roberts, meanwhile, placed fifth in the 18-21 100m breaststroke final.

After four days of competition Bermuda were lying 13th out of 19 nations competing in the championships.

FISHER FIRST IN 1500 HEAT ATH Fisher first in 1500 heat Top Bermuda distance runner Jennifer Fisher gets another chance at a medal during the Veteran World Athletic Championships when she contests the 1500 metres final today in Buffalo, New York.

Fisher qualified by placing first in yesterday's first heat, finishing in just under five minutes. The top four plus the seven other fastest times in two heats were allowed passage to the final.

Fisher already has gold and silver medals after placing first and second in the 800 and 400 hurdles respectively.

CRICKET CRI Somerset Cricket Club will hold a special general meeting to discuss Cup Match at the club's auditorium, starting at 8.30 next Saturday evening.

ROAD RUNNING RUN Swan's Running Club have changed the venue of their weekly Fun Run and Walk on Monday at 6.00 p.m. to White Hill Field from Horseshoe Bay. On Tuesday, the club will hold their monthly meeting at the Department of Youth and Sports at 7.00 p.m.

SOCCER SOC North Village are asking all soccer players interested in transferring to their club next season to attend a special meeting on Tuesday, starting at 7.00 p.m.
