Cleveland skittled

St. David?s installed themselves among the early front-runners for the one-day championship yesterday with a second win in as many matches.

Their seven-wicket triumph over a lacklustre Cleveland ? who must be a tad worried with successive losses over the weekend ? makes them one of three unbeaten teams heading into the third round.

Clay Smith?s men barely broke a sweat as they skittled out the home side for 111 in 36.5 overs and romped to victory with 113 for three in 18.5 overs at Wellington Oval.

Lionel Cann, clearly in a hurry, belted 34 not out from 12 balls in 13 minutes with three fours and an equal number of sixes to see St. David?s mission accomplished. He shared an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 34 with Delyone Borden. Opener Chris Foggo contributed 24 while there were 35 extras, including 27 wides.

Cleveland?s inadequate total could have been much worse but for opener Curtis Jackson?s unbeaten 43 (five fours) and 42 extras (35 wides). No other batsman impressed as Cleveland lost men at regular intervals with the second-wicket partnership of 34 between Jackson and Mishael Paynter being the most fruitful. Jackson and Jeff Tyrell also posted 22 for the sixth wicket before the latter?s stumps were rearranged by Borden.

St. David?s captain Clay Smith led by example in the bowling department, picking up four for 22 off 8.5 overs and teenager Borden ? continuing from his heroics against Southampton Rangers last Sunday ? collected three for 19 from ten overs.

Kameron Fox, Arthur Pitcher Jr. and Mackie Crane accounted for the three other Cleveland wickets.
