Stars take sweet revenge

A week after a humiliating innings defeat to St. George?s in two-day cricket, Western Stars exacted suitable revenge in the abbreviated form of the game.

On the crest of an outstanding all-round performance by the effervescent Jacobi Robinson and a captain?s knock from Hasan Durham, the St. John?s Road club strode to a comfortable six-wicket triumph against their East End guests.

Pacer Robinson was easily the brightest of the Stars, dislodging the first two St. George?s batsmen and returning to mop up the last three to claim five for 55 from ten overs as the visitors ? sitting pretty on 103 for two and then 190 for five ? were bundled out for 223 in 47 overs.

When Stars replied with 227 for four wickets, Robinson shone again with a brilliant 55 not out off just 32 deliveries in 52 minutes. His fireworks, coupled with a responsible unbeaten 65 from 79 balls by Durham, shepherded the home side to victory from a potentially ominous position of 142 in the 35th over when Justin Robinson hauled out to Sinclair Gibbons at mid-on off Eugene Foggo for a quickfire 31 from 38 balls. Earlier, opener Jekon Edness had stroked 42 (five fours) from 77 balls.

Requiring another 82 runs from 15 overs, Stars made rapid progress towards their target as both Robinson and Durham found their touch and range against St. George?s lacklustre line-up. Their unbeaten stand of 85 was filled with boundaries with Durham?s sweet timing and unerring placement earning him eight fours ? including a straight hit off Foggo to raise his fifty ? while savage Robinson bludgeoned the bowling for four fours and an equal number of sixes.

The strongly-built youngster was particularly severe on Foggo and Wilbur Burt, smacking the former for a six and four in his final over before setting his sights on Burt. In the 42nd over, he blasted the latter for a four and six before pulling the same bowler over mid-wicket and then hitting him straight into the carpark in the 46th over; both shots to maximum effect.

Having scampered a single from the final ball of the 46th over to level the totals, Robinson then savoured the privilege of scoring the winning runs from the first delivery of the 47th over, guiding Gregg Foggo to third man for four.

?We haven?t been winning lately so it?s good to get this victory, especially over St. George?s after losing to them so badly last week. I?m really glad to get some form before Cup Match to push for my spot and to prove to people that I should be in Ireland,? said an elated Robinson, alluding to the national team currently overseas for the ICC Trophy.

The 21-year-old cricketer termed his omission from the national squad ?a big disappointment?, noting that he had trained diligently from last November, only missing one week of practice.

?I put in the work but things happen,? he said, shrugging his shoulders as he accepted congratulations from Stars supporters.

Travis Smith and Herbie Bascome were the pick of St. George?s bowlers, taking one for 36 from ten overs and one for 16 from eight overs respectively.

Deciding to take first knock, St. George?s should have made more of their positive start and solid contributions throughout their batting order. Openers Oronde Bascome (20; two fours) and Gibbons (27; four fours) put on 50 before Jacobi Robinson rearranged the latter?s stumps in the seventh over. His partner followed two overs later with the score on 57.

Troy Hall and Smith repaired the damage with a stand of 46 ? Hall smashing five boundaries and a six in 68 balls while Smith managed three fours in his 24 from 35 balls. Detroy Smith and Allan Douglas Jr also added valuable runs ? 25 and 37 respectively ? but the regularity with which St. George?s wickets were tumbling proved to be their undoing; the last five wickets falling for 35 runs.

Two run outs and a wicket each to David Lovell, Justin Robinson and Durham, backed up Robinson?s bowling heroics.
