Soccer tours dependent on fares deal

month, providing an agreement can be reached with the Bermuda Football Association over funding for air fare.

That is the final issue to be sorted out, BFA general secretary David Sabir stated yesterday.

"We are currently negotiating what portion of the air fare the BFA can assist with,'' said Sabir.

"Negotiations will take us up to 50 per cent, no more. The tours hinge on the cost of the air fare and how much the BFA is prepared to pay towards their travel to Bermuda.

"The tours are of some significance because both are ranked above us in the FIFA standings.'' Cayman, who were in Bermuda in May for the Copa Caribe qualifying tournament, are due to visit from September 7-12 while St. Lucia are planned for September 21-26.

Sabir said the Cayman tour will have to be confirmed by Friday or be scrapped.

"If we cannot reach an agreement by close of business on Friday then we'll have no choice but to cancel that tour,'' said Sabir.

The new season is due to start in the first weekend in September with the Charity Cup between Vasco and Devonshire Colts.

The BFA have secured major equipment suppliers overseas as a result of contractual agreements made on behalf of all national associations by FIFA and Concacaf.

As well, affiliates fees for the upcoming year will be waived, with FIFA lending financial support to help offset those fees, Sabir disclosed.

Affiliate fees amount to just under $50,000 a year.

Meanwhile, the BFA's adjourned AGM, scheduled for Young Men's Social Club on Tuesday night, was postponed because of the failure to raise a quorum. It has been rescheduled for next Wednesday at the same venue, starting at 6.30p.m.

The meeting is a continuation of the one held on July 26. Items remaining on the agenda are the auditor's report, the election of one more additional officer and any other business.

At that July meeting the entire executive led by president Neville Tyrrell, was returned, except treasurer Gladwin Bean who stood down. He was replaced by Delroy O'Brien.

Also coming on board are club representatives Michelle White of BAA and Devonshire Colts secretary Tina Woods. One additional club representative will be chosen next week.
