PHC gets green light for big lights

Applications Board approval for high-towered stadium flood lighting. The DAB gave the thumbs up to PHC's plan for six 90-foot poles and lights to replace ten 45-foot light poles. No objections to the advertised proposal were submitted.

PHC's application said the new poles could be lowered for ease of maintenance and safety in high winds. DAB conditions included removal of the existing 45-foot poles within four weeks of completion of the new poles. It also said the lighting system shall not be operated after 11.30 p.m.

In other DAB decisions this week, D&J Construction was allowed to go ahead with the subdivision of its lot on Quarry Hill Road in Warwick.

The company had applied to divide the property into five lots which are to be developed in time for residential use.

The DAB also approved building details for a dwelling unit on High Point Road in Pembroke. The application was submitted by the Dallas Family Trust.

Precision Construction Company Ltd. was given the go-ahead for interior remodelling of its building off Victoria Street in Hamilton to create a sandwich bar, a bake shop and a gymnasium.

BREAST CANCER HTH Breast cancer Women who have had breast cancer will be sharing their experiences during Breast Cancer Awareness Week, starting on Monday.

The women will be joining doctors at two public meetings -- one at 8 p.m. on May 26 at St. James Church Hall, Somerset, and one at 6 p.m. on May 27 at Wesley Methodist Church, Hamilton.

Sponsored by Bermuda Healthcare Services, Sandys Against Drugs and the Business and Professional Women's Association, the meetings will be stressing the importance of self examination and mammography.

VISITOR FINED FOR CANNABIS CTS Visitor fined for cannabis A 24-year-old visitor, caught with 1.17 grams of cannabis, was fined $200 in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Laura Christie, of Trumbull, Connecticut, pleaded guilty to the May 17 offence.

Sgt. Wilbert McLean, prosecuting, said Christie was searched by Customs officers after she arrived at the Civil Air Terminal.

In the left hand pocket of her purse, officers found a plastic bag containing loose plant material and two home made cigarettes.

Sgt. McLean said Christie told the officers: "It's marijuana. It's mine.'' When examined by the Government analyst, the material was found to be cannabis weighing 0.64 grams and 0.53 grams respectively.

MOTORCYCLIST HURT AC Motorcyclist hurt A Smith's motorcyclist was taken to hospital with a broken knee after a head-on crash. The 17-year-old cyclist was riding along Middle Road, Paget, on Wednesday morning when he was involved in a collision with a tractor trailer going the opposite way. The driver, a 51-year-old Sandys man, was unhurt.

UNPAID TAXI FARE CRM Unpaid taxi fare A 30-year-old Pembroke man is expected to appear in court after being arrested on Wednesday night for not paying a $20 taxi fare. The taxi driver told Police he picked up the man and took him to Southampton, where he bolted. Police found the man hiding behind a house.
