A CD with a message
Carly D -- whose real name is Carlyle Bascome -- has seen many years of waiting and perfecting his art come to fruition in the release of the 15-song "On a Mission''.
The CD features local hits from the early 1990's, "Games People Play'' and "Round and Round'' which he said local fans will remember.
And although there are some party songs and one soca piece, most have a message.
"I thought it was a good thing to do,'' he told The Royal Gazette this week.
"It's more or less a mixture. I thought it was a good thing to do to add soca and hip-hop music.'' He added: "This is a conscious album. Yes, we wanted to have songs about having a good time but we are on a mission to spread the music.'' One song features the D.J. skills of Ninja Cutty (Shawn Clarke) and is Carly's attempt at healing the age divide.
"One of the lines on that one is `don't make the youth feel abandoned','' he said. "It speaks to the youth and to the Country in general.'' Carly D said two songs, "Hear My Call'' and "Shine Your Light'' are personal addresses to God. "Hear My Call'' is a duet with Cornelius (Don Cornelius) Carmichael.
Although recording began in March in Long Island, New York, Lonnie (L.B.
Fresh) Bascome, Robert (Bob) Edwards, and Palmer Wade wrote and arranged the songs and recorded the demos in their home studio.
Carly D thanked the many people had given him encouragement and assistance in the creation of the CD including H.C.& F. Crew of Freeport, Long Island, Lloyd Webb who did the cover and photography, and back-up singers Heart, Mind, and Soul.
In addition, he thanked Sheelagh Cooper of the Coalition for the Protection of Children and PLP MP Nelson Bascome for their "timely assistance''.
CARLY DON -- He is `On a Mission'.
