Hollis and Selley share safety honours
Two men will share the accolade of Water Safety Person of the Year.
Former chairman of the Water Safety Council, Mark Selley, and veteran boat operator Llewellyn Hollis were the awardees at a presentation at Marine & Ports on Tuesday morning.
Sheelagh Cooper, head of the Water Safety Board, noted the contributions both men have made.
"Mark single handily brought water safety to the fore and was responsible for the water safety colouring book and its distribution to all schoolchildren,'' Mrs. Cooper noted.
"Mr. Hollis has been on the water for 35 years and is responsible for a number of rescues, especially to the north and northwest of the Island. I know many people are grateful for his help and some owe their lives to him.'' Mr. Hollis had some practical advice as he accepted the award.
"Before leaving the dock make sure all your safety equipment is on board and that your radio is working,'' he said.
Mr. Selley sought to drive home the importance for parents to educate their children on the dangers of the water.
"Every primary four kid should have the water safety colouring book,'' he said. "It has proven time and time again to work.'' Water Safety Week begins on May 24. A quiz on the topic takes place this week with a draw for prizes on Thursday.
Sea worthy! Llewellyn Hollis and Mark Selley were recognised for their outstanding contribution to water safety locally by the Water Safety Board at a presentation on Tuesday at Marine & Ports.
