Condor workers go on strike

BERLIN (Bloomberg) — Thomas Cook AG’s Condor airline said some flights leaving German airports yesterday morning were delayed because workers of its Berlin unit went on strike.Flights from Frankfurt and Munich to Palma de Majorca, Spain, were delayed, the Oberursel, Germany-based company said in an e-mailed statement.

Flights scheduled to leave Stuttgart, Germany, for Tenerife and Las Palmas in the Canary Islands will probably also be delayed, it said. Some passengers were rebooked onto other airlines, it said.

About 40 cabin crew members in German cities including Berlin and Frankfurt went on strike from about 5 a.m. to 9 a.m., according to Holger Roessler, who’s representing trade union Verdi in the negotiations with Condor.

Nine aircraft that were scheduled to operate were affected.

The workers are demanding raises as well as a guarantee the company won’t shut down any regional facilities, Roessler said.

Condor said that while it’s willing to guarantee maintaining facilities in Berlin and the German state of Brandenburg, demands for higher wages are “not comprehensible.”

Negotiations, which have been going on for 19 months already, will resume tomorrow, Roessler said.

Condor has announced it’s prepared to make workers a new offer, he said.

Thomas Cook is jointly owned by German airline Deutsche Lufthansa AG and department store operator KarstadtQuelle AG.
