BCB yet to decide on Gibbons’ fate

Treadwell Gibbons: Withdrawn from the national training squad.

Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) has yet to determine whether or not Treadwell Gibbons jr should be left off or reinstated to the senior national programme. The player was orginally named in a training squad of 36 players vying for places in Bermuda’s team for November’s ICC World Twenty20 qualifiers in Dubai but was suspended until a BCB probe into his antics that marred this year’s Cup Match is completed.“The BCB investigation is still ongoing. It is therefore not appropriate to make any public comment at this time,” BCB chief executive Neil Speight told The Royal Gazette.Local cricket’s governing body came under fire after naming Gibbons in the squad only days after the batsman’s unsportsmanlike conduct during Cup Match at Wellington Oval landed him in hot water with his club, St George’s.But according to the BCB, the squad had been “selected and approved” prior to Cup Match and was due to be released on Tuesday, August 6 — four days after Cup Match.Gibbons, who has a history of disciplinary run-ins stretching back a decade, was served with a suspended two-year ban and fined half of his match fee by his club. The 28-year old all-rounder stood his ground after being given out by umpire Richard Austin for a catch behind in the slips, a decision the batsman strongly disputed.Following consultations between the umpires and Somerset skipper Jekon Edness, Gibbons continued to show his displeasure and subsequently vented his anger towards the Somerset players, waving his bat as he approached them before batting partner, captain Oronde Bascome, intervened and urged his team-mate to leave the field.Gibbons was eventually escorted off the pitch where he had a heated exchange with a spectator near the clubhouse that was prevented from escalating by police.Gibbons’ conduct has been condemned by many in the local cricket community while St George’s have also come under fire for being too lenient on their player who publicly apologised for his behaviour ten days after Cup Match ended in a draw.
