Man caught on CCTV tampering with parking machinesA 30-year-old Somerset man was arrested after being caught on CCTV tampering with the pay and display machines near City Hall.The incident happened yesterday around 1.30am. Officers on mobile patrol were subsequently called to the area and arrested the man at the scene.A Police spokesman said: “The suspect was found with a screwdriver and a pair of scissors in his possession. The items were seized as evidence and a court appearance is anticipated in the very near future.”Weather Service Doppler radar is out of serviceA mechanical fault has knocked the Bermuda Weather Service’s Doppler radar out of operation.The Dept of Airport Operations has advised that an alternative to the radar imagery will soon be available on the Weather Service’s website and on the Weather channels on CableVision and WOW by this evening. The problem was described as “due to an unforseen mechanical fault” and will be out of service until a replacement part is installed.The problem “has not impacted the ability of the Bermuda Weather Service to provide its regular detailed observations and forecasts” on its website, www.weather.bm or via the cable providers or or by dialing 977, 9771, 9772 and 9773 a spokesman said last night.Bermuda Water Works wants new office buildingBermuda Water Works has put forward plans to refurbish its Devonshire headquarters, building a new warehouse and office building.According to an advertisement which appeared in the Official Gazette, the existing warehouse and driveways at the Parson’s Lane site will be partially demolished with a new retail/ warehouse and an office building being erected in their place.The site would also feature a new above ground fuel tank and a new parking area, to be built to the south of the main building. The Development Applications Board has yet to review the proposal.Motorcyclist fails breath analysisA motorcyclist failed a breath test after police spotted him swerving erratically.Officers stopped the man when they saw him travelling west along North Shore Road, Devonshire, at 12.25am yesterday.They said his eyes were glazed, his breath smelled of alcohol and he was unsteady on his feet. He was taken to Hamilton Police Station for a test, and was detained after failing it.Friends take late Elton John fan’s jacket to concertA denim jacket dedicated to Elton John has made it from Bermuda to a concert in Canada, as a tribute to deceased Island resident Peter Blaney.An avid Elton John fan, Mr Blaney died away two years ago. His cherished jacket, embroidered with the album design from Elton John’s ‘Madman across the Water’, reached Victoria, Canada in time for Sunday’s Elton John’s concert.To get to the show, the jacket travelled courtesy of family members and friends of Mr Blaney. They relayed it via the UK, from Bermuda to Ontario, to Vancouver Island.Old friend Lucy Mears, who brought the jacket to the concert, remembered enjoying the album with Mr Blaney while they were students in Peterborough, Ontario in 1978.Ms Mears came to Bermuda in February, 2009 to see Mr Blaney.The pair listened to their favourite music again with the ‘Madman’ jacket. Mr Blaney passed away on March 17, 2009.Ms Mears told the Victoria Times Colonist that if Elton John played ‘Levon’ at the Valentine’s Day concert: “Peter would be smiling down at him and probably belting it out.”Useful web link: www.timescolonist.com
