KO Cup champs face tough encounter
and Bailey's Bay, get the chance to reach yet another final when they play in separate semi-final matches today at St.David's and Sea Breeze Oval.
One or the other have been in each of the last six finals, with current champions St. George's bouncing back from their loss to Southampton Rangers in 1990 to beat Devonshire Rec. in the 1993 final and Bailey's Bay last year.
Bay romped to victory in '91 and '92 with wins over Devonshire Rec. and Stars and then again in '94 when they stopped Willow Cuts.
At least one of last year's finalists should reach the final with Bay having the easier task when they meet Eastern Counties rivals Cleveland at Sea Breeze Oval.
St. George's face tougher opponents in Western Stars against whom they will be seeking revenge following the loss they suffered in the Camel Cup final in May.
All four teams will welcome back players from the successful Bermuda tour to England, with St. George's and Stars having seven players back between them.
Wendell Smith will be happy to hand back the wicketkeeping duties to Dean Minors and the captaincy to younger brother Clay. Also back in the team will be Dexter Smith and Gregg Foggo.
Stars, who lost their Central Counties title to Police in the absence of captain Arnold Manders, Albert Steede and Jeff Richardson, will be determined to rebound from their first loss of the season. Their batting will be boosted considerably by the return of the trio, promising a tough time for the St.
George's bowlers.
Cleveland, who have already lost to Bay twice this season, will be determined not to make it three straight.
Just two weeks ago Bay clinched a 21-run win after Cleveland accomplished the hard part by restricting Bay to 156. But Clarkie Trott's nine for 45 -- the best figures of the season -- made sure Cleveland were denied a memorable victory over their long time rivals.
Back for Cleveland from overseas duty will be national coach Allan Douglas and allrounder Jermaine Postlethwaite while Charlie Marshall should return to the Bay team.
Both matches are 50 overs per side and will start at noon.
Open Premier League play continues tomorrow with Willow Cuts hosting second-placed Bay at Somerset, leaders Stars travelling to Nationals and Police at home to St. George's. The other match sees Cleveland entertaining St. David's.
In the First Division, top team Southampton Rangers take on Somerset while Flatts, second, should be favoured over bottom team Somerset Bridge at White Hill. Devonshire Rec. clash with Warwick at home while the Youth Squad take on third-placed PHC at St. David's.
All matches begin at 11 a.m.
In a bid to develop some fast bowling talent in time for the Shell/Sandals Tournament, Bermuda coach Douglas, with assistance from former fast bowler Winston (Coe) Trott, will hold specialised training on Wednesday at Police Field (6 p.m.) for 14 of the Island's medium to fast bowlers. "We need to fine tune some things and we would like everybody who is in contention to be there,'' said Douglas.
Players asked to attend are: Roger Blades, Gregg Foggo, Jermaine Postlethwaite, Janeiro Tucker, Freston Hurdle, Kevin Hurdle, Garry Williams, Diallo Sharrieff, Clarkie Trott, Anthony Braithwaite, Dale Fox, Alan Brangman, Quinton Sherlock Jr and Clevie Wade.
