Bowlers have 20 more spots to fill in final
of the American Airlines Bowling Spectacular, with 38 eligible in the scratch division.
With two weeks of qualifying rounds still to go, it is expected that each division will be increased by approximately 20 more bowlers. They must fulfill the requirement of bowling in a minimum of six of the nine weekly tournaments and placing in the top 15 in any one of them. The finals are scheduled for August 10.
In the meantime, Chris Leverock once again let it be known that he is a forced to be reckoned with, duplicating his victory from last week by winning the major scratch prizes for this week.
Leverock shot out all others in the first game by rolling a 226 game and he also accumulated a total of 618 pinfalls to take the scratch series prize.
Reginald Saunders won the second game with 232 and Omar Harvey the third game with 246.
In the handicap division, the patience and determination of Erwyn Bean paid off as he put together games of 233, 239 and 234 for the night's top series of 706. The prize list also included Omar Harvey's 705, Hank Rawlins' 698 Gregory Simons (690), Howard Francis (682), Chris Leverock (675), Wes Wilvert (674), and Reginald Saunders and Julian Van Lowe on 671 each.
The top handicap games were bowled by Harvey (278) and Peter Trott (267).
It had the smell and sound of Cup Match, with the calypso music, loud applause and aroma of fried chicken, fish, french fries and hamburgers and hotdogs.
But it was the Warwick Lanes and not Somerset or St. George's Cricket Clubs as the annual Bowlers Cup Match took place, with St. George's winning by 145.9 points to 142.1 for Somerset.
Somerset's players were slow to register and ended up with 37 bowlers taking on 50 from St. George's. This was not necessarily to their disadvantage as the game is based upon the quality of performance as compared to the number of performers with the teams' average taken into account.
St. George's struck hard and fast in the first innings (game) and pushed Somerset to the background 147.2 to 141.2. Somerset then responded in the second innings with a 143.9 average against 142.5 for St. George's.
That duplicated Somerset's position during the past two years and, as they did before, they fell down in the third innings with a 141.2 average while St.
George's crushed them 148.2.
St. George's captain Betty Lespere proudly received the two cups for the champions while newly elected Somerset captain Millicent Francis looked on.
ASCENTO HAT-TRICK SEES WARRIORS THROUGH SOC Ascento hat-trick sees Warriors through Bermuda's X Road Warriors under-12 soccer team defeated a Scottish club to go through to the knockout phase of an international tournament in Sweden.
The Warriors needed nothing less than a convincing victory over Vaspar Boys Club to progress after an opening-day 4-0 defeat against the host team IFK Gothenburg.
And a hat-trick from Howard Ascento helped the Warriors recover from the blow of conceding an early deflected goal to win 4-2.
Ascento grabbed the equaliser in the 16th minute after a fine solo run down the right and soon after kept his nerve in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper to slot home his second.
Coaches Saleem Talbot and Michael Johnston pushed their team into all-out attack after the break and they responded with a third goal five minutes after the restart when Ronniko Burchall chipped the 'keeper.
Halfway through the second half, Ascento rifled in his third, an unstoppable shot inside the right-hand upright after he had turned his marker.
Vaspar scored a second goal with a late penalty, but as Gotheburg lost their second match 4-0, the Warriors' 4-2 triumph was enough to qualify for the first stage of the knockout phase.
