Tennis players at Junior World qualifiers in Trinidad
Bermuda's top young tennis players travel to Trinidad this morning for the North/Central America and Caribbean Pre-Qualifying tournament for the World Juniors Championships.
A team of three girls and three boys will be flying the flag for Bermuda in the Caribbean island with the boys competing against players from 18 countries while the girls face opposition from 15 countries.
Jerome Bradshaw, the coach of the girls' team, will be travelling along with boys' coach Steve Bean and team manager Coleridge Place.
Bradshaw said that the boys and girls would be playing at different locations in Trinidad "because of the size of the event".
"They couldn't hold it all at one location so they will be using the Eddie Taylor Courts and the Trinidad Country Club," he said.
Leading the girls' team will be Tyler Smith who is the number one player in the 13 and Under division in the Caribbean. Joining her will be Clementine Keyes and Eva Frazzoni.
The boys will be led by Chris Rego who will team up with Evan Hughes and Adam Tuner.
Bradshaw said: "We have some very promising young players coming up – Tyler is of course ranked number one in her age group in the region and Chris, who has not had as much experience as Tyler, is a very talented player and he finished second in the 13 and Unders last year when Bermuda won the competition for the first time so we are looking for him to do well again this time around.
"They have been training as a group since the middle of February so they have had a good 10 to 12 sessions as a group and, of course, they have also been working independently with their own personal coaches."
Bermuda will have their work cut out for them as they will come up against Antigua/Barbuda (boys' team only), Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Grenada (boys only), Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Netherland Antilles, Panama, Nicaragua (boys only), Puerto Rico and hosts Trinidad.
The format of the competition will include singles and doubles.
Only the winner of the boys and girls will advance to do battle with Canada, Mexico and hosts the United States at the end of April.
And then the top two from that competition will travel to the Czech Republic in August to fight for the title of World Junior Tennis Champions.
Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association boss David Lambert said more trips by Bermuda teams would be coming up in the near future including players going to the Junior Davis and Fed Cups, the Davis Cup (senior) and the CAC Games. "This is going to be a very busy year," said Lambert.
