Undefeated Manders has season to remember
Gavin Manders has ended his 2009 singles schedule undefeated in all tournaments after beating a spirited Andy Bray in the WER Joell Memorial tournament.
Manders, who has also won the Argus Open and Island Construction, beat Bray 6-4,7-6 to win his third domestic title on Saturday.
The 23-year-old also went undefeated in his four singles matches in March and finished Bermuda's Group IV Davis Cup group 6-1 – an unprecedented overall record for a Bermuda player.
His one defeat of the season came in a doubles match.
"It feels really good to finish the year undefeated, being the first Bermudian to ever go undefeated locally and internationally in a year is very special for me," said Manders.
"Coming up from Port Royal and watching Ricky Mallory go undefeated locally, I'm just happy to be the next champion from Port Royal to take it a little further and go undefeated locally and internationally.
"I have to give thanks to Steve Bean who coached me from young and my coach Sam Maybury of the past two years.
"He (Maybury) has kept me focused and played an important role in my maturity on and off the court.
"The victory over Bray was nice but being it was the third time this year, it was something I expected from myself," added Manders.
"He has not figured out how to get around my strategy yet and I have a few more back up game plans that I haven't even had to use yet.
"He's a good player but it just shows how important the mental side of the game is and it's not just all about how you hit the ball."
Manders, who has returned to school in Florida since his victory, is confident he can only get better – a worrying sign for those looking to wrestle his crown from him.
"Patience played a part as it usually does when we play.
"But I believe confidence and the ability to read the wind and use it as a weapon rather than something that hinders you.
"I believe that mixed with mental toughness is what allowed me to come out on top.
"This is just a stepping stone for me, I will continue my schooling in West Palm Beach and continue to train.
"This has given me some extra motivation to take my training to another level not only on the court but off the court as well," he said.
"I hope to play a few tournaments in Florida but money has always been an issue, so I will have to see how it goes.
"But I can promise everyone that I'm more focused then ever and this accomplishment has only made me more focused."
