It was a real family affair for the winners of this year's Goodwill golf tournament.

The Massachusetts team of Dedham, comprised of brothers Reid and Kurt Foehl, their father Bill and pro Jimmy Norris, shot 60 at the tricky Port Royal course yesterday for an overall 238 to secure the net title by one stroke from Toronto.

But in a thrilling climax, it took birdies by Reid and Kurt on their final two holes -- the eighth and ninth -- to see off the Canadians, who carded a 59 at Castle Harbour in the tournament played over four courses throughout the week.

A delighted Kurt Foehl, who manages American rock band Fool's Progress which brother Reid fronts, said last night: "We figured we had to shoot a good score today. Reid hit a three net two on the eighth and I hit a four net three on the ninth. When those went in we all embraced in a big hug.'' He added: "It was a total team effort over the week. We all had our moments.

One person hung in at each hole and we made a lot of key putts when down to the last guy.

"Our pro had three birdies in a row at the second, third and fourth today.'' It was victory at the second attempt for the team.

Kurt, who has an eight handicap to his father's ten and brother's 15, said: "Last year my dad and I played with the pro and superintendent from our course. This year the superintendent wasn't available so we got my brother. He does about 180 concerts a year so doesn't usually play as much golf as us.

"We are all thrilled with the result, my shoes are at least six inches off the ground right now.'' Last year's winners, locals Ocean View, had to settle for third, two strokes back on 240 after shooting a 60 at the equally awkward Mid Ocean Club to finish.

The Port Royal team, led by pro Frankie Rabain, were just four shots off the lead overnight, but succumbed as the skies opened after a clear morning and failed to finish on their own turf.

Plantation Country Club, from Vedra Beach, Florida, finished fourth on 241 after scoring a 59 at Mid Ocean in their final round.

There was some consolation for the Canadian entrants as the gross tournament title was seized by the Lowes Island Club from Stirling, Vancouver. They carded a 65 at Belmont yesterday for a gross total of 262, one shot ahead of Tupper Lake, from New York, led by Belmont Invitational competitor Brent Smith.
