Smith Barney faces suit
SAN FRANCISCO (Bloomberg) — A Smith Barney broker in Florida and a former broker in Southern California joined a lawsuit against the investment firm, claiming it continues to discriminate against women after settling sexual harassment claims in 1997.One current and three former employees sued Smith Barney in San Francisco last year, accusing the Citigroup Inc unit. of steering accounts to male brokers and making it harder for women to earn commissions. The workers amended their complaint on Wednesday to add plaintiffs outside Northern California.
“We were mindful of the impression that the conduct is limited to one or two offices, when in fact it’s not,” Adam Klein, an attorney for the workers, said in an interview. “Our goal is to make the point that in offices in different parts of the company women are experiencing the same issues.”
The plaintiffs are seeking to represent about 5,000 women at the firm now or formerly. Smith Barney didn’t correct the practices covered in the 1997 settlement, the women’s lawyers said in court papers. Smith Barney denies it discriminates.
“The firm believes these claims are entirely without merit and will vigorously defend this position in upcoming proceedings,” Smith Barney said.
