Everest sees storm losses at $120 million

NEW YORK ? Everest Reinsurance Holdings Inc. said yesterday its share of aggregate losses from hurricanes and typhoons this quarter is at about $120 milllion.

Everest Reinsurance Holdings, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Everest Re Group Ltd (RE.N). The loss amount is an estimate of Everest Reinsurance's aggregate losses from hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne and the quarter's Pacific typhoons and is net of tax.

(Bloomberg) ? St. Paul Travelers Cos., the second- largest US commercial insurer, said three of four hurricanes to hit the southern US this year have cut third-quarter profit by $309 million.

Claims from Hurricanes Ivan, Frances, and Charley will cut earnings by 45 cents a share, the St. Paul, Minnesota-based insurer said in a statement. The company hasn't yet estimated losses from Hurricane Jeanne, which hit Florida on September 26.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had expected the insurer to earn about $1.10 a share before the first hurricane, which struck on August 13. The four storms probably cost the insurance industry $18.2 billion to $26.2 billion, according to preliminary estimates. This year's hurricane season will be the costliest in US history if it surpasses 1992, when hurricanes Andrew and Iniki cost $22 billion in today's dollars, said Fitch Ratings.

St. Paul Travelers had estimated $215 million in Charley and Frances losses last month. Today it added $94 million for Ivan.
