American locked up for impaired driving
A Bermuda Air Conditioner employee was fined and jailed for three months for impaired driving.
Police noticed Steven Concannon, 46, of Baltimore, as he was picking up his cycle in an unsteady manner near Arnolds, in Pembroke, on Wednesday. Magistrates' Court heard from Crown counsel Nicole Smith, that when the officers approached Concannon they noticed a strong smell of alcohol. They also noticed that his speech was slurred and his eyes were glazed and asked him if he had been drinking. He said: "Yes, and I'm going home."
Concannon, whose licence had been disqualified from November of 2007, told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that he was sorry and asked him for help. He said: "I would like to go to AA (Alcoholics Anonymous), I have had a drinking problem for years and I want help. I realise I was wrong and I'm very sorry."
Mr. Warner reminded Concannon that he was previously before him for no driver's licence and was fined for speeding and impaired driving and has yet to pay the fines.
Mr. Warner said: "When the courts tell you don't drive you still get on a bike and ride and possibly endanger people's lives."
He fined him $2,500, disqualified him from driving all vehicles for three years, 10 demerit points and three months imprisonment.
Since he accumulated seven demerit point for his previous offences his total of 17 demerit points gave him four years disqualification from driving.
