Bermuda Open champion Stephen Roberts successfully defended his singles title when he beat former winner Steve Dunleavy 4-1 in Wednesday's final at Old
Roberts took the first frame 55-46, thanks to a break of 31, but Dunleavy quickly evened, putting together two breaks of 14 to win the second frame.
The third frame featured superb safety play from both finalists but Roberts then potted pink and black to earn a 59-57 win. And once in front, he never looked back, wrapping up the match with 53-21 and 60-33 wins in the fourth and fifth frames.
It was his third Open title in the last four years.
In the doubles championship, Paul Charleton and Robert Gaglio won a nailbiter over Dunleavy and Reuben Burchall 3-2.
ROAD RUNNING RUN Would-be competitors in Bermuda's premier road race, the May 24 Marathon Derby, have less than two weeks to submit their entries.
This year's classic actually takes place on Monday, May 25 -- the public holiday -- and runners have until Friday, May 15 to return their entry forms to either Sportseller, The Pro Shop or International Sports Shop (entry fee $10).
Late entries will be accepted up until May 20 at an increased fee of $25.
Prizes will be offered in five race categories for male and female runners -- Junior (16-19), Open (20-39), Masters (40-49), Seniors (50-59), and Elders (60 and over).
ROLLER BLADING SKA Marathon Derby racing won't be confined to cyclists and runners.
For the fourth successive year, Bermuda Inline Skating Association are again organising a race from the west end into Hamilton.
Last year saw a record entry of 33 roller bladers and this year organisers hope to top that figure.
Aiming for a `three-peat' will be Elmore Warren who set the men's course record of 36 minutes, 40 seconds last year. The ladies' record also tumbled last year, Amanda Cox slashing seven minutes off the previous best to clock 39 minutes, 53 seconds.
