New-look Police ready to play . . .
Police cricket team have managed to avoid a crisis ahead of the new season.
After wondering whether they would be capable of fielding a team with so many regular players having transferred to new clubs in the off-season, the Prospect club have suddenly seen their ranks replenished and with membership still on the increase are now looking forward to this weekend?s first match.
An exodus of players, combined with administration problems, forced the club to call a series of meetings recently to determine their future.
?Things are looking up, the article in about us facing a dilemma has really turned things around. The response has been great with Police officers and others coming forward who are interested in playing for the club,? said long-serving official and veteran player Richard Austin.
According to Austin the expectation is that Police can now field a team capable of being competitive.
?Yes, we are very confident that we will have a team that will be able to compete with all of the other teams. We had a practice game last weekend and the players looked good, we are confident,? said Austin.
?Having seen our new players we are quietly optimistic that we will do fine. We might not win the league but we will challenge most of the others in the league.?
Absent from the side will be stalwarts such as former skipper Dennis Archer and Roshan Perera (to Western Stars), Jodi Maroni (Devonshire Rec.) and Terry Thomas (Social Club).
From the mid-1980s to the mid-?90s Police were considered one of the top teams on the Island.
In 1996 they won the Champion of Champions and in 1999 captured the Central Counties Championship.
