Man with blade followed and robbed schoolboy of his iPod
A 22-year-old St. George's man admitted robbing a schoolboy with a bladed weapon, when he appeared in Magistrates' Court.
Jovon Virgil, from Hidden Valley, pleaded guilty yesterday to robbery and possessing a bladed article in a public place.
According to Crown counsel Nicole Smith, Virgil approached the victim at the Hamilton bus station last Wednesday and started a conversation with the victim, who was returning home from school.
During the conversation, Virgil grabbed the headphones from the victim's iPod and began listening to his music.
When the victim boarded a bus heading east, Virgil followed, sitting next to the victim until both got off the bus near the Shelly Bay Market Place, in Hamilton Parish.
Virgil continued to follow the boy, telling him that he wanted the boy's iPod.
When the boy continued to walk away, Virgil showed the victim that he had a blade hidden in his jacket sleeve.
The schoolboy walked to the Crawl Hill Esso Station trying to get away from Virgil, but Virgil followed him, continuing to say that he wanted the iPod.
Once in the Tiger Mart, Virgil said to the boy: "If you snitch, I'll stab you right here in front of everyone."
The victim gave Virgil the iPod and contacted the Police once Virgil had walked away.
The officers later found Virgil in the area and discovered both the stolen iPod and an eight-and-a-half inch blade hidden in his jacket.
Graveney Bannister, representing Virgil, stressed that there were no injuries and that the stolen item was recovered, but Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner was not convinced by his arguments.
"He approached a schoolboy at the bus station, harassed him, followed him, intimidated him and robbed him," he said.
"I know him. I've put him on probation before and had to revoke it. He's ungovernable."
Mr. Warner ordered a social inquiry report, along with both psychological and psychiatric evaluations, and ordered Virgil to be remanded in custody until February 3 for sentencing.
