Hallowe’en ideas to keep little monsters at bay

Krystle Paulino, education coordinator at Masterworks, poses with students from School House Nursery and their spider handprint crafts.

If you want a real fright this Hallowe’en, how about a bunch of bored pre-schoolers? If you are the brave soul who is taking care of the children during half-term break this week, here are a couple of fun and easy craft ideas to keep the little monsters at bay. The ideas were supplied to us by Kristle Paulino, education coordinator at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art.Spider handprint on canvasMaterials:canvas or white construction paperblack, orange and white paintsmall paint brushsponge (cut into small squares)googly eyesMethod: Start off by sponging orange paint for the background. Use the white paint with small paint brush to create a web on the canvas for the background. Paint your child’s hands black and stamp them with palms facing inward on paper. Add googly eyes.Footprint ghostsMaterials:white paintblack and yellow construction papergoogly eyeswhite crayonsglue sticksMethod: Cut out a circle shape from yellow construction paper to create a moon. Glue moon onto black construction paper. Paint child’s foot with white paint and stamp on black paper (the heel being the head of the ghost). Add googly eyes. Use white crayons to draw a castle or scene in the background. Be sure to wash your child’s feet afterwards, otherwise your house really will be haunted.Cotton bud (Q-tip) skeletonsA great craft idea using cotton buds.Materials:black marker, white constructions paper, black construction paperscissorscotton budsglueMethod: Use a black marker to draw a skeleton face on the white paper. Cut out the skeleton face and glue it to the black construction paper. Glue the cotton buds to the black construction paper to make the bones. Use your scissors to cut the cotton buds to make shorter segments (like for fingers and toes). If even this is not enough to keep them occupied, Masterworks is running a free, harvest-themed arts and crafts event this Saturday from 10am to 2pm.Useful website: www.masterworks.bm .For a chance to win an iPod Touch, send us your best Halloween pictures and a coupon from The Royal Gazette. For more details see: www.royalgazette.com/article/20121023/NEWS/710239884
