IAAF delegate gives Bermuda top marks

IAAF technical delegate for the Carifta Games, Esther Maynard, has given Bermuda’s performance as hosts for this year’s regional track meet the thumbs up.Apart from one or two minor obstacles, the first woman from the English speaking Caribbean to be elected to the IAAF technical committee said this year’s Games went smoothly with Bermuda going above and beyond the call of duty.“Bermuda got more than a passing grade and you have certainly put us in some of the best accommodation, your transport is good and the meals are good so I think you get a 9.9 from me,” the Barbados Olympic Association committee member said.“I think Bermuda on the whole and the organising committee and president (Bermuda Track and Field Association) Donna Watson in particular needs to be congratulated.”Maynard was also moved by some of the performances in the big arena by the Island’s youthful Carifta team.“In spite of the young team, your Under-17 triple jumper (Justin Donawa) won the gold medal at the age of 15, which was an excellent result,” she added. “I have seen other performances that were also noteworthy and your distance people (runners) are doing well.“I enjoyed all the events and we’ve had some really excellent performances; not only the medal winners, but you’ve had quite a few records broken.“We’ve had some challenges with the wind and the weather. But this is what the athletes are going to face when they leave the Caribbean and maybe it’s a good indication here that conditions are not always going to be hot so the athletes have to learn to adjust.”Maynard’s primary role as technical delegate for this year’s Games was to ensure that every aspect of the track meet ran efficiently.“Once you have a smooth running meet the public and the athletes do their best,” she said. “We’ve had minor things behind the scenes to deal with but they were nothing out of the ordinary and nothing that could not be solved quite quickly.“Athletes and officials knew we did not have the fault/start mechanism, but I think the starters did a good job. We know we had the one false start which was a bit on the controversial side, but the rules that govern all those things at hand were very efficiently handled and justice was done for the athletes who had not contravened the rules.“I am happy as a technical delegate and it’s been a lot of work as it is for everybody and when you come in to galvanise and get a meet up running of this magnitude with this number of events it’s something you need rise up with.“I have been extremely pleased with the officials and the standard of officiating and the efficiency of them and their whole approach; they were very, very willing to learn from the international officials and technical officials. The other athletes’ officials are referees and from that end it has been excellent.”
