‘Jamaican sprinters will be tough to catch’

Bermuda Track and Field Association president Donna Watson has backed the Island’s Carifta Games hopefuls to rise to the big occasion.Watson is confident of Bermuda putting on a top class event and believes the local contingent are more than capable of producing an impressive medal haul on home soil.Among those she is tipping for medal glory are middle distance runners Taylor-Ashley Bean and Kyrah Scraders, two-time Carifta medallist Shaquille Dill and triple jumper Justin Donawa.“I’m looking for great performances from Taylor Ashley Bean in the Under-20 Girls 1500 and 3000 metres, Kyrah Scraders in the Under-17 Girls 800 and 1500 metres, while Zakiyyah Showers should have a good run in the 3000 metres,” she said.“Justin Donawa should be on the podium in the Under-17 Boys triple jump. His leap in the final Carifta trials of 13.99 should definitely put him in medal contention. We’re hoping Shaquille Dill can get his gold medal in his last Carifta in the 800 metres. If not, he should still factor in the medals.”Considering the quality of young athletes in Jamaica’s sprint stable, Watson concedes that Bermuda’s duo Jeneko Place and Kyle Webb could have their work cut out.“We will have to wait and see how Jeneko holds up with his slight injury. Kyle Webb should have a good run in the 100 and 200 metres,” she said. “Having watched the Jamaica High School Championships, both Jeneko and Kyle will have to run a big personal bests to factor in the 100 and 200 metres.”
