Pension process made easy for new retirees
The Department of Social Insurance (DOSI) is trying to expedite the pension process in anticipation of a record number of retirees.Starting on May 1, the department will contact seniors two months before they turn 65 and invite them to a meeting at the Department’s Hamilton office to learn more about their pension benefits and make sure the correct paperwork is in place.Department Director Karen Daniels said: “Our objective is to make the transition between work and receiving a pension as easy and smooth as possible.“If a person is handicapped or unable to come to the office, a DOSI team member will be happy to visit the person in their home.”This year a record number of Bermudians are expected to turn 65 as the first wave of Baby Boomers get ready for retirement. “The DOSI is anticipating that somewhere in the region of 700 senior residents will be reaching retirement age in 2011, the largest number in Bermuda’s history,” Ms Daniels said.“Each year over the next 20 years we anticipate equal or greater numbers, with 2028 seeing the largest number of residents turning 65. “The team at the Department has put measures in place to ensure everyone who will be 65 years old can have their pension questions answered.”Useful website: www.socialinsurance.gov.bm.
