VISITORS' VIEWS

A home from home

August 1, 2009

Dear Sir,

On a recent visit to Bermuda my wife and I decided to get gym memberships for the month. We are both fitness junkies and during our first week here, sought out the different fitness facilities on the island. Price, location, amenities, opening hours and ambiance were all factored into our decision-making. We were both shocked at the "quality" at some of these facilities.

Without naming names, one of the first facilities we chose to view had a good location but on our tour we noticed mould and fungi growing out of the ceiling. Really! In the US this type of facility would be shut down for such a health violation.

The next facility we visited was quite new. Friendly staff, no mold, and open 24 hours. However the membership was restricted and the times they were allowing folks to come didn't work with our schedule so we moved on.

Third time's the charm, as my grandmother would say, and it was. Hats off to Magnum gym! The natural light gave this gym a positive aura. It was sunny and bright, wood floors, and separate weights rooms for the heavier lifters and a circuit upstairs. All laid out and easy to use. The staff were very helpful, and dressed in appropriate exercise clothing, no crop tops and short shorts. Most impressive, the day after we joined the manager called us to ensure we received everything we needed and that we were happy. What professionalism! Sure, my wife paid a bit extra for the classes she wanted to do, but the money was well worth it to work out in such a healthy positive and happy environment. Plus a pool and very modern hot tub area, also clean and bright.

The next time we visit Bermuda we will be getting another membership at Magnum!

Worried by violence

August 5, 2009

Dear Sir,

We love our vacations to Bermuda. But lately all the violence the island has been experiencing is of concern to us. Bermuda was always a place to get away, enjoy all the wonderful people, ride our mopeds and feel relatively safe. I hope those in power recognise that if the violence continues, everyone loses.

Bermuda has the most amazing people. We have visited seven times and never once have we felt unwelcome. Everyone we encounter is friendly and helpful. Don't let a few people ruin the warm inviting character Bermuda is known for.
