Mirrors Programme extended into all public middle schools

Government's Mirrors programme will extend to middle school students next year, said Social Rehabilitation Minister Neletha Butterfield.

The new component of the Mirror's programme will include a 'Coaching for Success' initiative, which will be implemented in two of the Island's middle schools.

Ms Butterfield told the House of Assembly on Friday: "We have seen the positive effect of the Mirrors programme on the 154 participants of Mirrors and we are convinced that Mirrors can make an impact on many more of our young people at an even earlier stage in their development."

Next year's Mirrors programme will also include two intensive residentials one in June for males between the ages of 19 and 23, and a second in November for males and females aged 15 to 18.

"Mirrors is making a difference in the lives of young people," said Ms Butterfield. "Youth are being empowered and they are increasing positive relationships with adults. Since the programme was launched in April 2007 there has been a growing interest expressed by members of the public in becoming more involved in the programme. This interest is evident by the 280-plus volunteers that have supported the programme to date.

"Three hundred and fifty professionals have participated in the professional development training and reported effective change in their personal lives."

The programme, which was evaluated this past summer, has accomplished its basic mission of empowering the Island's youths, said Ms Butterfield. The evaluation results show that most Mirrors participants had "satisfactory" transactions and have developed more trusting relationships with adults and peers.

Participants are also taking part in more positive community-level activities and are making better lifestyle choices, she said. Those looking for more information on the programme should call 294-9291 or E-mail mirrors@gov.bm.
