A tree for the environment
Energy Minister Terry Lister yesterday launched a scheme to cut the carbon in Bermuda's atmosphere by planting a cedar tree at CedarBridge Academy.
Similar tree planting will take place at schools across the Island throughout the year as part of the World Information Technology Services Alliance's global environmental efforts.
Bermuda will host the WITSA's global public policy summit next year, when 400 delegates from across the world will gather at Fairmont Southampton.
Yesterday, Mr. Lister told the media that planting trees is an effective method for offsetting carbon production.
"As you can see, I am excited by this initiative as it touches on many aspects of sustainable development, namely the economic benefit derived from hosting this conference in Bermuda."
He was joined by WITSA secretary general James Poisant, who said: "We are excited to be having our 2009 conference in Bermuda and are impressed with the initiative and leadership that the Bermuda Government has shown in launching this programme to show that the ICT community not only understands but embraces the global green movement in terms of carbon emissions."
Trees are to be donated by the Save Open Spaces charity.
