Teens wrap up Trinidad tourney

Bermuda number one Chris Rego.

Bermuda's girls team finished in sixth place while the boys' team ended up in 11th place after the final day's play in Trinidad on Saturday at the North/Central America and Caribbean Pre-Qualifying tournament for the World Juniors Championships.

The girls team could not follow up the fortunes of Friday's play when they beat the Bahamas.

In the first match, Clementine Keyes could not find any answer to the steady play of the Guatemalan number three Maria Alejandra Espana – perhaps on account of her effort in the victory over the Bahamas 24 hours earlier. Keyes eventually went down 6-4, 6-4.

Bermuda coach Jerome Bradshaw said the Island's number one player, Tyler Smith, stepped up for the second match to try and save the day.

"Her opponent, Camila Ramazzini, was surprisingly erratic with her serve and promptly put much pressure on her ground game to make up for it. This was not a good situation for the Guatemalan as she was 'bageled' in the first set.

"Lacking any pressure, Smith let up in the second set and errors crept into her game. She lost three out of four service games with double faults on the last point of those games. Fortunately for her she was able to break back at will and closed out the match 6-0, 6-4."

Again the Bermuda team were left to settle the tie through the doubles rubber.

Ramazzini and Kelly Berduo faced Smith and Eva Frazonni and the Bermuda duo provided some resistance causing the Guatemalan captain to become more vocal with his team. In the end, Bermuda could not find enough and the match went to Guatemala 6-4, 6-4 who thus won the tie 2-1 which put them in fifth place just ahead of Bermuda.

Bermuda's boys faced hosts Trinidad in the final match on Saturday with Evan Hughes opening up against Ross Hackshaw.

This match went the way of Trinidad in quick time by a margin of 6-0, 6-1.

The eagerly awaited match-up of the number ones saw Bermuda's Chris Rego take on Scott Lanser.

Coach Bradshaw said: "This was a tactical match with both players feeling his opponent out. This was not a master blaster match but rather a nice medium paced type of game with the ball being moved around through all areas of the court. Neither player led by more than one game. Matters became urgent at 5-5. Chris made his move and broke the Trini's serve at 15 and then promptly held to close the first set 7-5.

"Chris had his way in the second set as the Trini had no answer for the Bermudian's steady play and good sense in recovery."

Lanser began to loose patience and thus made more and more errors. It was all over in two sets to Bermuda 7-5, 6-2.

Now the the doubles would be the decider.

Trinidad seemed confident and Lanser teamed his six-foot plus partner Che Sanchez to take on Rego and Adam Turner.

"The Bermudians found themselves a set down in no time at all. Change of fortunes in the second set brought things to a set all," said Bradshaw.

In the third and final set Bermuda's team played with a "wave of confidence" and won 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 and clinched the tie 2-1.

The Bahamas won the boys' event and Puerto Rico the girls' event. Now they have earned a place in the next qualifying tournament to be held in Boca Raton, Florida alongside the USA, Canada and Mexico.

The two tops teams from that event go onto the finals later this year in August in the Czech Republic.
