A great evening with 'Bassey, Beyonce, Jackson and Sybil'
The lip-synching, the dancing, the acting, the lighting and – most of all – the variety, were all excellent at Sybil's Dynamic Female Impersonators show.
In fact the only thing that I could complain about was the late start and the early morning finish.
Otherwise, the show ran like clockwork – and it was an exciting journey for those in the audience at the City Hall Theatre on Saturday.
The evening marked the fifth annual showcase for Sybil Barrington, a.k.a. Mark Anderson. He opened the night in a stunning gold ensemble, the backdrop lighting was fire engine red, all in all a glamorous combination topped off with a rendition of Shirley Bassey's cover of Pink's hit, 'Get the Party Started'.
Later performances included a few tunes from the Rodgers and Hammerstein hit musical 'The Sound of Music'. One could almost imagine its protagonist Maria Von Trapp, dancing across the Austrian Alps during a performance of 'Climb Every Mountain'.
Just as well received were two other classics from the popular production, 'Do-Re-Mi' and 'My Favorite Things'.
Chrissy Dior's performance of Beyoncé's hit 'Crazy', drew screams and yelps from the crowd, while one couldn't help recall the actual Supremes during a stunning spectacle which included bouffant wigs, gorgeous gowns and of course, their Motown hits.
Lady Tyson received a standing ovation for her performance of 'And I'm Telling You', the noted song from the award-winning musical Dreamgirls.
And then, true comedy took over. Nishanti Bailey joined The Two Fools, Jahrizino Simmons and her brother Nadanja, in a skit, 'How Not to Act in an Interview'. Mr. Simmons, who arrived on a stolen cycle, was donned in street gear with his earphones and helmet on.
Mr. Bailey evoked a round of audience laughter as he appeared dressed in a green frock, sporting a moustache. His character 'Tiffany' informed the interviewer, Miss Bailey, all about what she didn't intend on doing. Hilarious!
There was also a tribute to the late female impersonator Joe Ascento, but due to technical difficulties the planned film was unable to be viewed.
Some of the other highlights included impersonations of Diana Ross, Grace Jones, Lucille Ball, Liza Minelli, and Michael Jackson.
Kenny Todd performed two hits, while Sheila Showers did a rendition of Amy Winehouse.
Sybil delivered the last number of the night as Patti LaBelle.
No matter what your persuasion, it was an excellent night out – the audience sang along with the tunes and gave hearty applause to the performers for a job well done.
