Overseas treatment for shooting victim

Bermuda's most recent shooting victim, now identified as Princeton Burrows, was airlifted off the Island yesterday for medical treatment.

Just before 4 p.m. on Monday the victim, Mr. Burrows, a 19-year-old, was shot in the lower torso while riding a motorcycle on Middle Road near the junction with Woodlawn Road.

He was rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where he stayed in serious condition until yesterday morning, when he was airlifted.

In an interview with ZBM News last night, Mr. Burrow's mother said that doctors were afraid that damage to an artery in his left thigh caused by a bullet could lead to the leg requiring amputation.

"We were told he was going to have his left leg amputated," she said. "The doctors couldn't find a pulse in his foot."

Despite the initial concern, she said he is expected to have a full recovery.

She described her son as a "big, strong young man," but said she would not make him sound like a perfect angel.

"He was caught up in the street business, but he has turned his life around."

Area MP and candidate for Premier Terry Lister said those involved in the recent outbreak of firearm violence need to develop a community conscience.

"What is actually happening on our society are acts of terrorism, and to a point people are being held hostage in our community," he said.

"If the perpetrators had a community conscience, Monday's incident would not have occurred.

"The gunmen must learn to develop a social bond. A sense of economic deprivation with a feeling of having little to lose often drives a deviation from behaviour that is socially acceptable. Deviant behaviour instead seems more attractive.

"It is time now for our young people to consider the negative impact that their behaviour is having on our society and to cease the behaviour.

"The Police and the courts are doing their job, as I have said before. It's now up to the young men themselves to reflect on the damage they are doing to our way of life and to show respect by calling a truce and stopping the shootings."

While the Police are thanking the many people who have already provided information about the shooting, they are still seeking more information.

Anyone who can assist Police is asked to contact the Serious Crime Unit at 295-0011.
