Stan moves up the table

Bermuda's Sam Stan moved up the table after yesterday's racing at the South American Optimist Championships being sailed in Uruguay.

Four races were sailed yesterday and Stan, Bermuda's national champion, had a 39th, a sixth, a 13th and an eighth place to move from 41st overall to 38th. The final two races are scheduled to be sailed today on the course in the Punte del Este.

Over 160 sailors including the present World and North American champions are at the annual regatta which is being led by Argentina's Ignacio Varisco.

Bermuda's Ceci Wollmann had finished of 43, 30, 22 and a superb third to sit in 108th place overall after 10 races with one throwout.

Ellie Wollmann had finishes of 42, 30, 15 and 38 and now sits in 119th place while Rory Caslin is in 129th place after finishing yesterday's races in 52nd, 42nd, 20th and 24th.

Arnold Ferdinand is in 138th place and yesterday had finishes of 47, 35, 42 and 42.

Bermuda's youngest sailor, nine-year-old Mikey Wollmann, is in 151st place overall and he had finishes of 38th, 25 and two OCS finishes.

While Bermuda were knocked out of the team racing on Wednesday after being beaten by Canada I and Canada II in the double elimination, Peru II were crowned the new South American Team Racing Champions and USA 1 were the winners of the Nations Cup.

The course for the South American Team Racing Championship was set right off the harbour, between the breakwater and Gorrity Island, while the area for the Nations Cup was in front of Parada 5 in La Mansa so that spectators could get a good view of the racing.

Both sail offs (as the final is called) were sailed in 13 knots of wind. In the Nations Cup, the final was USA I against USA III with USA 1 winning gold and USA III silver, while Peru, who had lost the semifinals against USA 1, earned bronze.

In the South American team racing, the match was a classic – Argentina I clashed with Peru II. The first race was won by Peru and the second by Argentina and the grand final was won by Peru.
